Night @ the OPERA

Opera arias in Italian, German and Spanish filled the Daniw living room. Though foreign to most of our ears, we were all enchanted by our guest soprano singers.

If you missed out on all the love – which is the most common theme of the operas, scroll down to feel that passion in the pictures taken that night.

Guest performers:

Lead soprano performer Anna Migallos with sopranos Aya Tanciongco and Stef Quintin & pianist April Merced.

Stopping by INDIA

Travel Daniw arrived in India just on time!

The second concert of Travel Daniw featured “The Music of India” with Professor Joey Valenciano, a musicologist and sitar player.

While the West is busy creating innovations in music, India on the other had learned to perfect its own art - music! India, as an exotic country was able to preserve its culture especially its music amidst globalization.

It is a very rare occasion that a Filipino can play the sitar, which is an Indian instrument. Prof. Joey, the only sitar player here in the Philippines, gave a lecture and concert on Indian music and the sitar.

In awe upon seeing the striking sitar, everyone learned a great deal about India from Prof. Joey. Here are some pictures taken during the trip! I hope you can join us next time!

Travel Daniw: Destination 1

Discovering the rhythm and beat of your name!

Our first destination: “Music Appreciation: A Look into Music of Changing Times and Evolving Cultures” by Joy Guadalupe from UP Music Education and David Guadalupe from UP Musicology and Center for Ethnomusicology.

Music is much more than the sound produced by an instrument being played or a song being sung by a singer. Music defines a person, a country and even culture. Times have changed and so many things in life changed but music still lives. No matter how music evolved, it still serves it purpose up to this very day.

Music is for… entertainment, right of passage, important events, games, study, self-expression, therapy, relaxation, etc.

We can’t deny that all of us are music lovers and music runs within our veins. We can either be a singer, musician, composer, part of the audience or just someone who is listening to an ipod or radio. No matter what role we play in the musical society, we will forever be a part of it.

If you missed our first trip, there are still 11 more trips! To encourage you further, here are some of the pictures during the first trip.

Start It Right: College at your fingertips

They reminded me of myself, two years ago: hopeful, excited, even slightly scared. Indeed, being a freshman is no joke. Imagine listening to your music playlist in shuffle mode. Think of that split second of silence between two songs, when the last song has just ended, and a new one is about to begin…and you have no idea what it is. Well, starting college is just like that. For some, it may mean leaving your comfort zone and plunging into the great unknown. For others, maybe it’s like being in a foreign land they just can’t wait to explore. Either ways, the question stays the same: What’s in it for me?
Start It Right, the freshman orientation held in Daniw Residence and Study Center on July 20, headed by Ms. Cecille Grulla, was especially made to help incoming college freshmen to prepare for the challenges and new experiences that await them, both inside and outside the classroom.
The activity was divided into three major parts. The first part was a lecture by Ms. Carla Co, a summa cum laude graduate of BS Chemical Engineering from UP Diliman. She talked about academics, and she also revealed some of her secrets to getting high grades. The next part was all about leadership. The speaker was Ms. Inna Morillo, the Chair of the UP Diliman School of Economics. The last part of the activity was about creating social networks in college, and the how-tos on making new friends. Ms. Karen Montevirgen, a cum laude of BS Psychology in UP Diliman, and also a first year medical school student in UP Manila, was the speaker.
After the talks, freshmen, speakers, and other college girls discussed about campus culture (and everything else under the sun!) over lunch. This was followed by a game of Taboo after lunch.
In the end, the participants in Start It Right (girls from different universities in Quezon City), all left with newfound friends, and all the “college” wisdom they might need, thanks to the “elders”.

COFFEE PAINTING

The first big day of Summer Camp 2009!

We are very honored to have Ms. Sunshine Plata, a renowned coffee painter here in the Philippines as our guest. She inspired and taught the kids how to paint not just by using watercolor but also by using coffee.

Don't be bothered if you missed out on all the fun & excitement! The aroma of the pictures will entice your senses and might even inspire to paint as well.

So, what are you waiting for? Give yourself a break and be a Summer Camp 2009 volunteer!
